This news is just out there:

We have just released an update to the Steam client that renames the MasterServers.vdf file to MasterServer2.vdf. This was to ensure all players refresh the list of Masters. Once you receive the update, your Client will automatically retrieve and save the master information in this new file.

This probably means that Setti's MasterServers.vdf must be also renamed to MasterServers2.vdf.

Can somebody test and confirm that the new masterservers2.vdf works with Setti? It should be as simple as renaming the file.

Steam now automatically creates a File named "MasterServer2.vdf" [color="#FF0000"]NOT "MasterServer[color="#FF0000"]s2.vdf"
it should be work if you rename it to "[color="#00FF00"]MasterServer2.vdf" and enable Write-Protection.
I just wanted to make that clear.

Good point. Indeed the file is MasterServer2.vdf and not MasterServers2.vdf.

Hmm... is MasterServer2.vdf just a new "primary file" and masterservers.vdf still works just as fine if masterserver2.vdf is not present.

Masterservers2 is irrelevant, as far as i can understand it's a mere backup(!). The file that matters is the Masterservers.vdf(!).

I don't think that is completely true though. I guess that if masterserver2.vdf is not found then masterservers.vdf is used.

On the mailing list they said that first they released the new Steam update with MasterServers.vdf. It was the old file, but new content. Then for some reason they decided that they wanted to be sure everybody updates and renamed the file to MasterServer2.vdf. The old name MasterServers.vdf is then logically not in use anymore, because they wanted to make sure everybody updates.

I don't know if the games still use MasterServers.vdf or MasterServer2.vdf. Steam definitely uses MasterServer2.vdf.

Setti's masterserver installation instructions need to be updated, but we need confirmations about the filenames.

In any case install instructions need to be for both old masterservers.vdf and new masterserver2.vdf. There are still lots of "old" standalone games which work fine with masterservers.vdf.

Have tested 2 games:

1. Cracked css with steam emulation doesnt work with Setti MasterServer2.vdf, first load it says: no connection with Masterservers. After reload it creates new file with name masterservers.vdf in same directory with following text:

"MasterServers"
{
"hl1"
{
"0"
{
"addr" "72.165.61.136:27010"
}
"1"
{
"addr" "69.28.151.162:27013"
}
"2"
{
"addr" "72.165.61.189:27010"
}
"3"
{
"addr" "68.142.72.250:27010"
}
}
"hl2"
{
"0"
{
"addr" "216.207.205.98:27011"
}
"1"
{
"addr" "216.207.205.99:27011"
}
}
}

But it works with Setti MasterServers.vdf very good.

2. Licensed Steam CSS works with Setti MasterServer2.vdf and Setti MasterServers.vdf both normally.
We must protect the forest for those who can’t speak.

Great news!

It means the old masterserver installation instructions are still valid. Everybody who are using MasterServers.vdf can continue to do so. Then everybody who have updated to MasterServer2.vdf period can use either of the names.
