Introduction

On this tutorial you will learn how to add custom startup music to ALL your VALVe games. Let's get started.

Steps

1. As a first step, you need your ".mp3" file. You can use every ".mp3" file you want.
Note: In order your ".mp3" file to work properly, the samplerate of your file must be 44100 kHz.
If it's not, you can use a converter program to convert it. I recommend you the "Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate".

2. The next step is to rename your ".mp3" file. Rename it to "gamestartup.mp3".

3. And now the last step. The folder where you have to place the "gamestartup.mp3" file.

HL1 based games: place it in "media" folder (e.g. for CS:1.6: "..\Counter-Strike\cstrike\media").

Source based games: place it in "sound\UI" folder (e.g. for CS:S: "..\Counter-Strike Source\cstrike\custom\my_custom_stuff\sound\UI").

FAQ

Q: Can i add multiple music files?

A: Yes you can. Make sure the files are ".mp3" and the samplerate is 44100 kHz and then rename the files as follows:

gamestartup1.mp3
gamestartup2.mp3
gamestartup3.mp3
gamestartup4.mp3
...

Tip: Startup music can be disabled by starting with "-nostartupsound".

Nice tut, I'm going to try this right now, Just one q. The .mp3 has to be a specific time length? Or can it be as long as possible?

Thanks :D I made a new piano roll on FL Studio and exported an MP3 with 450kbps and 16bit render and it worked :D

If you want I'll be happy enough to make a video on youtube for this tut and give the link to you so you can put it on here?

Thanks for backing-up and for upgrading my old tutorial from 2005. DZ forums are down (probably forever), so it's good job done.

I'm posting the old tutorial, while it still works with CSS v1.0.0.34, build 4044, protocol 7:
