It can actually mean that your game is outdated. Download CS:S + updates at http://css.setti.inf...-nosteam-setti/

No. It means that the server is outdated

I've heard that sometimes the client gets that error message even though it is the server that is outdated. It may have something to do with people messing up with their steam.inf version numbers or stuff.

The solution is that you update your game and play on updated servers. Or you check server versions at http://css.setti.info/servers/css/ and try to connect to those servers that are the same as your game. You can see your game version by writing "version" in the console. You'll get console by starting the game with "-console" parameter.

Another thing is that when people ask "What does it mean" they are actually asking "How can I play". Nobody cares about versions.
