I'll comment only on the important components.
CPU: I suggest Intel. Depending on the money you can get various Core i-series. I recommend Core i7-920 or Core i7-i860 (or something similar). 920 has a chipset supporting tripple channel memory, 860 has a chipset suporting dual channel memory. So that influences RAM, hence money (otherwise these CPUs are basically the same, performance- wise). Triple channel means 3 sticks, probably 2 GB per stick so thats 6 GB total. Dual channel is 2 stick, probably 2 GB per stick, 4 GB total. That's cheaper but 2 GB less. I'd probably still recommend Core i7-860 on LGA 1156, or something in that range. That will last you longer with great performance. And you can later get another 2 sticks of 2 GB for a total of 8 GB dual channel which will be plenty.
GFX: Decide on a good card. Not the best, but good. That's something you probably won't want to get outdated very soon. Don't count too much on going SLI or CrossFire in the future. You probably never will and even if you do, it will not be worth it then. A single GFX card setup will most likely be the best.
Motherboard: Check specs carefully. If you need RAID, go for a proper chipset. Check the PCI and PCI Express slot layout. Some motherboards are really awkward and a GFX card inserted in a PCIe slot can easily block the PCI slot below it, rendering it useless. Make sure that won't happen to you, in case you have any PCI peripherals at home and need to use them. ASUS or Gigabyte are OK.
PSU: Buy a good SINGLE RAIL (!) 600W or 750W power supply unit, silver or gold rated. Modular is nice so you can avoid cable clutter. Avoid cheap ones. A real world example: You know those short power fluctuations you sometimes have in your house ? There was a half a second power outage in my house recently and the PCs with good PSUs stayed on while the ones with cheap ones all shut down or rebooted. One of those then developed a RAID array failure and caused wasted time resolving that issue. Not worth it !

What RAID configuration (0-6) you have? If its "0" post a link where system is tested and it shows tangible speed increase.

there are enough tests in the world wide web, if you want to inform yourself more about this stuff.
ps: i like raid 1 because you have a safe system then.
